France is the star of the first day of the CSI2* Santander

The traditional field of the Palacio de la Magdalena is dressed up to host a new edition of what is already a classic of the Spanish summer, the International Show Jumping Competition of Santander, which has had the starting signal today, Friday.

A total of 81 pairs have participated throughout the day in the three classes that have been held on this opening day. The Marseillaise put the icing on the cake to a magnificent summer day that allowed all, riders, horses and public alike, to enjoy themselves in this exclusive facilities.

The rider Olivier Camy Sarthy and his horse Carlo Mouche have left no option to the rest of the pairs in the big class of the day, the Suzuki Trophy. A magnificent time of 64'43 seconds without accumulated faults made him the lead in the race, ahead of the Asturian Gerardo Menéndez and Deus de Tus who, in spite of a good ride, finished two seconds slower than the French rider.

The Spanish José Bono and his dappled horse Ali Baba HT finished third. The couple confirmed the good harmony they have.

In total a test with 23 starts and only seven clean rides.

Throughout the weekend, the course designer Javier Trénor will be responsible for the design of the courses that will make the grass arena look the most classic of the northern Spanish area, which today has shown its good conditions despite the amount of rain that fell in the previous days.

In the Ayuntamiento of Santander Trophy, the second race of the day, the protagonist was a young rider from Asturias. Alejandro Álvarez Gutiérrez flew to the first place with Little Chap S in a test at 1.20m, disputed in two phases. The podium was completed by two riders. The Mexican Ángela González Muñoz and the student of the two-time winner of the Caixabank Grand Prix, Elena Gandía, image rider of Atlético de Madrid soccer team, rounded off the first day with second and third place.

Luis Márquez Méndez from Madrid was on the podium for the first time this morning at the start of the XXI CSI Santander. Luis won the Canalsa Trophy, dedicated to the memory of José Manuel Riancho, after beating Kevin González de Zárate leader so far in the 1.30m test disputed under the two-phase. Together with Viace Houston DH Z, 11 y/o horse that has previously passed through the stable of Julio Arias, Luis has inaugurated this edition confirming his good sporting moment.

Luis was accompanied on the podium by Kevin González de Zárate and the Frenchman Alexandre Boudarel, an old acquaintance of this CSI Santander, riding "Carlo SAM".


The kick off for an event that, opens the summer season in Spain and that once again fills the Cantabrian facilities with a fabulous entertainment offer for the whole family. There will be no absence of bets and the ponies are back, this time, with the help of Caixabank for the enjoyment of the little ones and accompanied with the best ever views.
