Lucía Fernández Hidalgo, overwhelming in the Caixabank Trophy of the 114th CSI1* LGCT Madrid
17 May 2025For the second consecutive day, Lucía Fernández Hidalgo shone again in the big event of the CSI category 1* of the 114th Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) in Madrid. The Spanish rider was overwhelming in the Caixabank Trophy, taking the first two places in the final classification.
She took an early lead in the provisional table of the test with “Byblos D'Elle” and remained in the lead until the final stretch, in which she surpassed herself with her other horse, “Sir Thomas PS”. Lucía Fernández Hidalgo, junior rider, who trains in the capital of Spain under the direction of Sergio Álvarez Moya and Ismael García Roque, rounded off a perfect performance, taking the first two places in the final classification ahead of the other 54 riders who competed in the Caixabank Trophy.
The test was held in two phases and of the eleven pairs that finished both with zero points, Lucía Fernández Hidalgo was the only one, with her two horses, who completed the second phase in less than 29 seconds, with two almost identical courses: 28'11 and 28'64.
Another young Spanish rider, this one in the U-21 category, Juan Riva Gil, also pushed hard for the victory. He completed two magnificent rides over both phases riding the Irish “Fernhill Balou Beau”, but was left with 29'54 seconds in third position. The rider of the Club de Campo-Villa de Madrid, who was already Junior Champion of Spain, is consolidating more and more in his current Young Rider stage.
Only 2 hundredths of a second behind in fourth position was an experienced rider, Pilar Lucrecia Cordón, riding the bull “Machiavelli B”, and fifth was Fernando de los Santos with “Gallimard Bois Margot”.
David Abarrategui, director of private banking of Caixabank Madrid presented the Caixabank Trophy to the winner. At the ceremony, he was accompanied by Cayetana Hernández de la Riva, Councilor of the Club de Campo -Villa de Madrid and Councilor President of the Salamanca district, and by Álvaro Arrieta, President of Oxer Sport.
Mahou Trophy in two heights
Saturday's program of the CSI1* LGCT Madrid was opened with the Mahou Trophy of 1'15 meters, a test oriented to amateur or novice riders and riders who competed against the timer. It had 25 participants and a fully female and Spanish podium.
The winner, who received the Mahou Trophy from Marta Martínez Macarrón, Mahou's Venues Manager, was Alejandra Abando, rider of the Club de Campo-Villa de Madrid, who stopped the timer in 56'87 seconds with “Chic and Go”, a 13 year old French mare, with which she beat her closest rival, Lucía Valeros with “Coltaire Valdemesto” by more than 2 seconds. In third place was Alejandra Masoliver Sagardoy with the CDE, “Sevilla de Villafranca”.
Next, the second test of the day was held, again sponsored by Mahou, but in this case on obstacles with maximum heights of 1'25 meters. Twenty-three teams took to the track, ending with a much more universal podium, with two riders and a horsewoman from three different continents.
This 1'25 Mahou Trophy was marked by speed. The fastest riders clocked around 58 seconds, until the last competitor blew all odds out of the water with an impressive ride in 54'95. It was done by a rider from the United Arab Emirates, Ali Hussain Alnowais, riding “Narcos vd Smidshoeve”.
The second classified was a young rider from Guatemala, who is currently training in Madrid under the guidance of the Canarian rider Ismael García Roque. She was Valentina Arenas Saravia, who rode “Mágico” in 58'27, 34 hundredths of a second less than the time of the third classified, the expert Portuguese rider Norbert Ell, riding “Gotha”.
As in the previous test, Marta Martínez Macarrón presented the Mahou Trophy to the winning rider.
The program of this first day of the 114th CSI LGCT continues on the green track of the Club de Campo-Villa de Madrid with the two races of the CSI5*, the Trofeo Grupo Eulen 1.45 m and the Copa S.M el Rey, Trofeo Caser Grupo Helvetia 1.50m.
