In the first day, Spanish victories in the CSI2* and a great Ludger Beerbaum imposed himself on Caixabank Trophy.
Bright triumph of the German Ludger Beerbaum with “Cool Feeling” in the last class of the day, the Caixabank Trophy. The “Káiser” beat the two members of the New York Empire team who were dominating the class, Scott Brash and Spencer Smith, after a clear round with a perfect execution. The 16 teams of the Global Champions League risk their first round in the fifth venue, where the local team Madrid in Motion finished in the second place, making the public vibrate with the double zero of Eric Van der Vleuten and his son Maikel. But it was the New York Empire team who gave the surprise of the afternoon with their victory.
Disputed under Table A against the clock and with a 1.55m height, the triple combination put more than one rider in trouble. “I didn´t expect to win”, assured the German, pleased after mastering the course, the first top place he achieves with his 11-years-old horse.
Harrie Smolders has won the Air Europa Trophy, the first CSI5* class disputed and also first scoring class for the Longines Ranking FEI. The Dutch, 17thplace in the Longines Ranking FEI, makes a good tandem with his fast “Zinius”; both won the FEI World Cup in Paris last year. The audience enjoyed a 1.45m height course, in which only a few riders risked the second phase to scratch a few seconds from the clock. The American Laura Kraut snatched away Mikael Van der Vleuten´s second place for just four hundredths of a second, and the young Irish Michael Duffy, fourth place, risked along the veterans with a cut facing the tenth obstacle, Massimo Dutti´s oxer, overcoming the Swedish Malin Baryard-Johnsson for tenths of a second.
The Spanish riders have started strong in the CSI2 *. María López de la Vara and her mare "Garsina", which she has been riding for a short time, have won the Ifema MHW Trophy of 1.15m. The next class of 1.25m, also sponsored by Ifema MHW, has been much busier, with 49 starts and 17 clear rounds. Victory has been for the local rider Marco Juncadella Hohenlohe riding Elion V, rider who became part of the national team but in recent years had moved away from the competition. Very fast pair that does not stop to reap triumphs since they returned to the fight. But the most success on participation has been in the Iberdrola Trophy. Even with the bars at 1.40m, 17 of the 55 pairs finished at zero, leaving the first five riders with a very tight time result between them. Jaime Azcarraga and his Hanoverian "Verdinale", 11-year-old horse that has been obtaining good results with the Mexican this year, have managed to beat the young Pablo Valle for a few seconds. The third place has also been occupied by a Spanish rider, Alberto Márquez Galobardes.
The second day of competition will start tomorrow at 9.15am.
