SPAIN TRIUMPHS THE CSIO GIJÓN NATIONS CUP

The Spanish national team have achieved and amazing victory in the Nations Cup with a great first round and a second round where the team conquered the first position in the ranking. Great Britain and Sweden also made the podium.
The Spanish team has won the Nations Cup of the CSIO Gijón with 12 faults. This competition qualifies for London 2012 Olympic Games and counts towards the FEI Rolex Ranking. The couples of the Spanish team were the following: Pilar Lucrecia Cordón and Nuage Bleu, Eduardo Álvarez Aznar and Rico Revel, Jesús Garmendia and Lord Du Mont Milon, and last but not least, Julio Arias and Murat de Reve.
Sweden was the leader at the end of the first round and was clear round. Spain had 4 faults and Great Britain had 11 faults. These results made everyone think that the second round was going to be amazing, and it did not disappoint anyone. Norway, Ireland and France started second round with 12 faults whereas Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy did not qualify for the final and were eliminated from the competition. At the end of the second round Spain had a total of 12 faults and became the winner of the Nations Cup.
The Spanish national team has won this competition in 2001 and 2002 so this is the third time they win the Nations Cup at the CSIO Gijón.
CAPTAIN DAVID O’BRIEN WINS THE SPEED FINAL
The winners of the 8th class at the CSIO Gijón are Captain David O’Brien and his mare Mo Chroi. They were clear round and have done a timing of 68.41 seconds.
The Irish rider, Capt. O’Brien has done a tremendous job today and have won the Casino de Asturias class, 8th one of the CSIO Gijón 2011. He was clear round in this Speed Final and it wasn’t an easy job as the other riders had similar timings. This added excitement to the final, and a crowd of 13.000 people were happy to see it and enjoy it. The couple that followed O’Brien on the ranking was the Spanish Alberto Márquez Galobardes and Kedehop de Breve who were ahead on the ranking but lost the first place at the end of the final.
ANOTHER VICTORY FOR THE IRISH
O’Brien was very pleased with the victory. The Irish rider knew that he had to be fast in order to win and he said that “I’ve been very lucky, a rider always tries to win and this victory makes me very happy”.
This is the second victory for the Irish in this show as Dermott Lennon was the winner of the 4th class. “We are doing good races and we hope to win two or three more classes in this show”, said O’Brien.
The best couples of the class were the following: Captain O Brien and Mo Chroi (winner); Alberto Márquez Galobardes and Kedehop de Breve (second place); Gregory Whatelet and Crushing Z (third place); Piet Raijmakers Jr and Van Schijndel´s Chanelly (fourth place); Koen Vereecke and Busch Van Het Prinsenveld (fifth place).
